Temptation with a glaze…Thursday

June 29, 2009 · 1 Comment

Today was the first time I realized that I haven’t had any sort of temptation or offer to eat something other than healthy food…until now.  As I turned the corner to get into my tiny kiosk of a world at work I noticed a new co-worker just three spots down the row.  She was golden brown and covered head to toe in the shiniest glaze as if she were just stepping out of  the ocean in a tropical hawaiian commercial…her name was Krispy Creme.  Oh those donuts looked good, so like Joseph of Egypt, I ran.  Not really, but I did stuff my face into my cubicle out of her lustful sight.   The episode past fairly quickly, but I was suprised to notice that I’d never even been offered junk food all week outside of this experience.  It seems like that should happen all the time.  Eating healthy is turning out to be easier than I thought it would.

Thursday’s Menu

  • B – Oatmeal w/ a Banana
  • L – 2 Fajitas (yellow orange, green peppers,  chicken, cheese, avocado, sour cream, corn tortilla), avo smoothie (avocado, milk, sugar)
  • D – Broccoli Soup (1 cup broccoli, 1/4 cup onion, 1/4 tsp. bouillon, 1 cup hot milk, 1/8 cup cheddar, 1 tsp. starch)

Broccoli Soup in 10 minutes or less

Broccoli Soup in 10 minutes or less

  • S – Smoothie (Banana, Frozen fruit -grape, peach, mango, milk, sugar)

Cost:

  • Breakfast: $0.46
  • Lunch: (already had a bunch of ingredients from Tuesday) $2.00+/-
  • Dinner: $3.00
  • Snack: $1.00

Total Cost: $6.46

My meals were pretty tasty today and the main lesson here is resist temptation.  She may have golden brown skin and shine like no other, but broccoli soup is pretty shiny herself (admitedly a very weak argument…and I’m not sure why every food I eat is female…that’s just how it is so please don’t ask me to change.  Eating male donuts just sounds wrong).

Tips for Eating Healthy (and being kind to your bowels)…Wednesday

June 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Tips for eating healthy turned out to be tips on being kind to your bowel.  For decency’s sake, I won’t go into which bowel movement I’m talking about, but I will say that I’ve spent less time sitting with my pants around my ankles lately…too much?  Oh well, it’s true.  Eat what makes you bowels happy.  That’s  the one of the best tips for eating healthy that I can give.  However, here are a few other tips for eating healthy that come from Micheal Pollan’s book, “In Defense of Food” Buy whole foods in place of processed foods.  The whole is greater than the sum of the part (read the book, you’ll understand), In the market, try not to buy things your great grandparents wouldn’t recognize as food.  And here’s the overall slogan, “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.”

Wednesday’s Menu (and more tips for eathing healthy)

B – Avo shake (milk, 1/2 avo, raw sugar) $0.70, banana $0.30, edamame (boiled and salted soy beans) $0.30 – $1.30

L – Cafe Fresh Turkey Avo Wrap courtesy of my work (spinach tortilla, veginaise, lettuce, tomato, onion, avo, turkey) cantalope, melon, grapes. – $7.50

Eating Healthy On a Budget…Tuesday

June 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Eating healthy on a budget isn’t quite as hard as I thought it would be.   True, it takes a bit more time and money than I thought it would, but after all these years of setting the microwave to 3 minutes walking away only to return once to stir, I’m finding that I enjoy cooking.  So, eating healthy on a budget isn’t so much the issue as I see it.  The issue is taking he time and most of all, the effort, to plan and prepare a healthy meal.  Any way, if eating healthy on a budget is the concern, no worries.  Check these costs out.

Healthy Eating Plans…Monday

June 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Healthy eating plans were on-and-off in my head for the past couple of years. My dad had bypass surgery when I was in the sixth grade. That means I always eat the lean ham, egg and cheese Breakfast Jack at Jack in the Box…not the best of healthy eating plans, I’ll admit.  Anyway, it’s pretty safe to say that I’ve never gone a week making my own food and never eating out.  I just finished reading Michael Pollan’s “In Defense of Food,” which preaches the value of whole foods and more conservative eating habits (which I got the feeling could be summed up by saying do everything opposite of Americans), somewhat extreme healthy eating plans.  Now, I’ve been warned about fully buying into any extreme philosophies time and again by my dad, a conservative by any definition.  However, I couldn’t help but identify with a lot of the concepts he talked about which made me want to create some healthy eating plans of my own.

I’m not going to explain the whole book, however, if you’re the least bit interested in healthy eating plans of your own, I highly recommend reading it. What it did do was peak my curiosity to the point of defending food myself. It turns out that healthy eating plans aren’t too hard to stick to after all, or make up for that matter.  The following posts tell about a week of…healthy eating.

If you really need this legend. . .well, I’m just proud that you were able to get online.  So congratulations, and here it is:

A Week Of…Take One

June 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

My bathroom time was cut significantly. My body felt better, cleaner even.  My mouth tasted lighter.  I wanted to share what  I’d done, so I decided to write about it.

That led me to think that everybody has something to share.  We all have little “life experiments” that we’ve been itching to try, shaving all our body hair,  exercising in a fun way, meeting completely different kinds of people, or eating healthy.  Whether its for a few days or a week it’d be sweet if you shared it with others too.

So, if you have any ideas and would like to post your experience here, email me at aweekof@gmail.com.  And if you are planning on shaving all your body hair, lets keep the pictures to a minimum.
